DIY Kitchenaid Mixer using printable vinyl

DIY Kitchenaid Mixer using printable vinyl

Printable Vinyl has been one of my favorite medias to use with my Silhouette CAMEO for quite some time. It’s incredibly versatile and totally customizable. All of the projects you see below were created using printable vinyl and Silhouette Studio.

The first thing you’ll want to do when you’re dealing with print and cut is turn on your registration marks, this will give you an idea of how much space you have to work with. I always set my margins to the lowest setting so that I can maximize my amount of free space. To do this you simply drag the sliders marked 0.625 all the way down to 0.394.

In this case, the design I’m using comes with the option of margins or no margins around the flowers. Since I’m going for the look of a painted mixer, I don’t want margins around my designs. Just right click to ungroup the designs and delete the unwanted text and shapes.

Once you have your designs in place (inside the margins!) you’ll want to click the print button and send it to your printer. Your designs will print along with the black registration marks.

BelowΒ is how your image will look once printed. At this point you just place your printed vinyl on your cutting mat and load it into the cutting machine. Set your blade to a 1 and click “send to Silhouette”. The machine will read the registration marks and perfectly cut around the printed designs. I placed one of the flowers on a black background so you can see how well the design was cut out.

Once you peel away the backing all you need to do is place your vinyl stickers on your mixer! I don’t use transfer tape for this because the stickers are thick enough to pick up and smooth down by hand. If you get a crease or bubble in your sticker, just peel it up and re-stick!

  2. Do you put anything over the printable vinyl in order to make it waterproof? Love how your mixer turned out 😍

    • Yes! I used the premium vinyl laminate overlay from Expressions! You just layer it on top of your printable vinyl before you put it into the cutting machine! Thanks, I’m glad you like it! πŸ™‚

    • It was a lot of trial and error to get the right size for my Macbook Air. There doesn’t seem to be a template available anywhere. I can email you my template if that helps.

  11. Hi, Kayla! Awesome tutorial! Not sure if you watch her show, but your mixer reminds me of the hand painted mixers featured on Ree Drummond’s “The Pioneer Woman” on Food Network. I am a Silhouette user, but I have never used print and cut. Should I be able to change the color of the Amy Robinson designs within Silhouette Studio so that I can choose another color that better matches my kitchen and mixer? I love the designs – would just like to alter the color.

Thanks again for sharing! Your mixer looks just perfect! πŸ™‚

    • Thank you! Ree’s mixer was 100% my inspiration for this project! I have been crushing on it for years but didn’t want to chance ruining my mixer with paint so vinyl stickers were the perfect solution!
Unfortunately, you can’t alter the colors of this particular design. I bet you could find one in the design store that would work for you! The selection of florals is HUGE!

  12. This is awesome! Would the same vinyl method work for decals on muhs or tumblers? Would it stay and be (hand)washable??

    • Hi, Jaime! The printable vinyl does not work well on anything that has to be washed. Even with the vinyl overlay you will still have some water seep underneath and cause the ink to bleed. πŸ™ bummer, I know!

  15. Love the design! I am ordering the supplies to make this next week. Do you know if I could use the same design sizes and measurement for my Silhouette Portrait? I am a newbie using my Silhouette and don’t want to make a mistake with one of my first projects. I want to give this a try but not sure how to convert the size for Portrait. Thank you for your help!

    • Hi Janet, I hope I’m not to late to help you out! You can totally use the same design and sizes on your portrait, you would just put less on each sheet so that you end up with two sheets of decals instead of just one. Does that make sense?

  16. Hi! This is so gorgeous. I am in love. How have your pretty little flowers held up? I use my mixer frequently & usually make a mess of it and it needs a good wiping down afterwards. I dont spray it with anything usually, but wipe down/scrub with a damp cloth.

    • Thank you!! They have help up so well! They honestly still look the exact same as the day I put them on. They are covered with a clear vinyl overlay so it protects them from spills. I normally just end up with flower all over the place and thats easy to wipe away!
