DIY Christmas Home Decor with Adhesive Vinyl

When it comes to home decor, I like to keep it as simple and budget friendly as possible. Today’s DIY project falls under both of those categories. With just a couple of sheets of adhesive vinyl and a blank wood sign, you can create a customized piece of home decor for the holidays. So, dust off that cutting machine (I’m using the Cricut Maker) and join me in today’s step-by-step tutorial.

Estimated Time To Complete: 20 mins (beginner)

Supplies Needed:

Step One: Design Setup

Download the Simple Reindeer SVG and upload the design into Design Space. Right click the image and select duplicate to make as many reindeer as you need for your sign. Scale them to fit the dimensions of the sign then click the make it button.

On the following screen you’ll see that the images are seperated onto mats according to their color. Select vinyl as the cutting material and click continue.

Step Two: Load and Cut Vinyl

Place the black adhesive vinyl on the cutting mat with the shiny side facing up and load the mat into the machine. Press the start button and the machine will cut the first part of the design.

After the eyes and antlers have finished cutting, place the sheet of buffalo check vinyl on the cutting mat and cut out the reindeer noses.

Step Three: Weed Images

Peel the excess vinyl away from the cut images.

Step Four: Separate and Apply Transfer Tape

Use scissors to seperate the sets of eyes and antlers.

Then, place a sheet of transfer tape sticky side up and line the images up. I prefer doing it this way so I don’t get any creases or bubbles.

Flip the transfer tape over and burnish over the designs so that they are totaly adhered to the transfer tape, then cut them apart again.

Step Five: Transfer Decals

Place the decal on the wood sign and use pressure from your hands or from a scraper tool to adhere the vinyl to the wood.

Peel away the transfer tape.

Continue this step until all of the eye/antlers are in place.

For the noses I opted not to use transfer tape, the ovals are really easy to peel and stick but if you’re more comfortable using transfer tape then that is totally fine too.

Continue placing the noses on until all of the little reindeer faces are complete!

I’m quite happy with how this little sign turned out. It’s rustic and very farmhouse-esque. Plus, it was SO easy!

You can kick this sign up a notch by adding the names of your family members under each reindeer. It would also make a very thoughtful gift for a grandparent, just add the names of each grandchild and voila! Instant grandma tears.

Happy Holidays and happy crafting. ♥
